History
First of a series of 12 ships. Sisterships: VILLE D'ORAN (1880), SAINT AUGUSTIN (1880), MOISE (1880), VILLE DE MADRID (1880), VILLE DE BONE (1880), VILLE DE BARCELONE (1880), ABD EL KADER (1880), ISAAC PEREIRE (1880), KLEBER (1880), VILLE DE ROME (1881), VILLE DE NAPLES (1882). Brought into service in July 1880 on the lines of North Africa, at the departure of Marseille. On July 3, 1888, is collided off Tunisia by the steamer VILLE DE BREST (1871) of Transat and sinks in twenty minutes. Her captain dies after his rescue.
