cargo ship CALDERA

Compagnie Générale Transatlantique, 1879 - 1886
History
Built, for speculative purposes, on behalf of the British shipping company Peninsular & Oriental under the name of ASSAM. The P&O having given up taking of her delivery, the ship remains unutilised during two years until her repurchase by Pacific Steam Navigation Compagny, another British shipping company, in August 1870. Renamed CALDERA and brought into service on the line serving the West coast of South America. In 1876, is sold to the British shipyards John Laird, in Birkenhead, which fit her with a right stem and a new compound engine. In December 1878, is bought by Compagnie Générale Transatlantique which renames her CALDÉRA. Is placed on January 1879 on a line connecting Marseille to Havana and New-Orleans. In 1881, is transferred on the line of New York. Is laid up in Le Havre in 1883. In 1886, is sold to a British shipping company. In May 1887, due to a water leak, was deserted off Sudan and sinks.
