First of a series of 8 paddle wheels steamers ordered, for 3 of them, in Scotland, and for the 5 others with the shipyards of Penhoët lately created. Sisterships : LAFAYETTE (1864), IMPERATRICE EUGENIE (1865), EUROPE (1865), FRANCE (1865), NOUVEAU MONDE (1865), PANAMA (1866), SAINT LAURENT (1866) modified on dock into a propeller ship. On June 15, 1864, inaugurates the line Le Havre-New York of Compagnie Générale Transatlantique. The first crossing lasts 13 days. In April 1865 (May 1866?), is transferred on the line of Colon. In 1867-68, is transformed into a propeller steamer and her hull lengthened of 10 meters. Three masts instead of two. Given in service in May 1868. Reallocated to the line of New York in October 1871, in lieu of LAFAYETTE, seriously damaged by a fire. During the winter 1872-73, her engines are replaced. From 1874, serves the line of New York during summer and the line of the West Indies during winter. Modernized in 1883-84, then placed on the line of Mexico. Again assigned to the line of Colon in 1888. Again transformed during the winter 1896-97. Raised chimneys. February 4, 1899, runs up against the swing bridge of Saint-Nazaire. Demolished in Marseille in 1900.
