History
Third and the last of a series of 3 steamers built to serve the Saint-Nazaire-Colon-Valparaiso line. Stem with ram. Sisterships : VILLE DE BORDEAUX (1871) and VILLE DE SAINT-NAZAIRE (1872). Put in service in January 1872 on the line of Valparaiso. The line is closed in 1874. Is completely transformed in 1874-75. Ram removed. In 1875, is assigned to the line of Colon. In 1880, receives new boilers then is placed on the line of Mexico. In 1886, is transferred on the lines of the Mediterranean. July 7, 1888, runs down and sinks the steamer CHARLES QUINT of Transat, off the foreland of Kerkena. In 1889-90, receives new boilers. From 1896, is used as ship of reserve. September 15, 1896, inaugurates the fast service monthly Marseille-West Indies-New York. Demolished in 1899 in Marseille.
