History
Second of a series of 3 steamers built to serve the Saint-Nazaire-Colon-Valparaiso line. Stem with ram. Sisterships : VILLE DE BREST (1871) and VILLE DE SAINT-NAZAIRE (1872). Put in service in October 1871 on the line of Mexico then assigned to the service line of Valparaiso. The line is closed in 1874. Is completely transformed in 1874-75. Ram removed. In 1875, is assigned to the line of Colon. In 1879, receives new boilers. From 1882 to 1886, is placed on the line of Mexico. In September 1884, strands in La Désirade. Must be refloated then immobilized for repairs until April 1885. In February 1887, is assigned to the line of Haïti. On May 7, 1887, collects the passengers and the crew of the steamer VILLE DE RIO DE JANEIRO rammed and sunk by the steamer La CHAMPAGNE of Transat. In 1888, receives new boilers. In April 1890, is placed on the line connecting Marseilles to Colon. Laid up in Le Havre in January 1898. Sold for the demolition in Cherbourg in 1899.
