History
First of two ships built on behalf of the British shipping company South American & General Steam Navigation Company, under the name of IMPERADOR. Sistership : VERA CRUZ (1855). Brought into service July 1854 on a line connecting Liverpool to South America. Bought by Transat in 1862. Renamed TAMPICO and placed on the line of Mexico in May. In August 1866, is transferred on the line Le Havre-New York to ensure the transport of emigrants. From September 1868 to May 1869, is used like stationary in the West Indies. In 1869-70, receives a compound engine. Renamed GUADELOUPE and placed again on the line of Mexico in May 1870. In 1875, is transferred on the line of Colon. From 1880, is used on the lines of North Africa. In May 1889, is sold to a Norwegian shipowner and renamed SORRENTO. August 1890, she is shipwrecked in the North sea.
