Compagnie Générale Transatlantique, 1931 - 1953
History
Sixth and the last of a series of six ships. Sisterships : SAN ANTONIO (1930), SAN DIEGO (1930), SAN FRANCISCO (1930), SAN JOSE (1931), SAN MATEO (1931). Brought into service in April 1931 on the lines of the North Pacific. From 1934, is used on the South Pacific. On 12 June 1940, belonged to the last convoy to leave Le Havre. Takes refuge then in Marseille. On December 21, 1942, is seized by the Germans. On August 21, 1944, is sunk in Marseille by the German troops in retirement. Refloated in 1946, she is reconditioned from 1948 to 1950 and put again in service in October 1950, after having undergone important transformations. In 1953, is sold to a Panamanian shipping company and renamed URANUS. Is chartered by Horn Linie in Hamburg. At the end of the freighting in 1955 (?), is renamed ANTO, then in 1957, EASTWIND. Demolished in 1959 or 1960.
