History
Fifth of a series of six ships. Sisterships : SAN ANTONIO (1930), SAN DIEGO (1930), SAN FRANCISCO (1930), SAN JOSE (1931), SAN PEDRO (1931). Brought into service in 1931 on the lines of the North Pacific. On June 24, 1940, is seized by the Germans. In 1942, is transformed into naval barracks and is renamed WOHNSCHIFF 17 (?). Is found at the end of the war in Hamburg. On June 29, 1945, is returned to the French Governement. Begins again her service under the name of SAN MATEO. Until 1950, is used as passenger and cargo boat on the line of the West Indies, where the absence of steamers designed for the line is strongly experienced. In 1954, is sold to a Panamanian shipping company and renamed SAN MARDENO. In July 1954, loses herself by failure.
