History

First of a series of six ships. Sisterships : SAN DIEGO (1930), SAN FRANCISCO (1930), SAN JOSE (1931), SAN MATEO (1931), SAN PEDRO (1931). Brought into service in October 1930 on the lines of the North Pacific. In 1940, is laid up in Marseille. On December 21, 1942, is seized by the Germans. On January 10, 1943, is torpedoed in the Mediterranean by British submarine SAHIB but she manages to strand and is put again in service. On May 5, 1943, is sunk by American plane off Trapani, in Sicily.
