Third of a series of 12 ships. Sisterships : CHARLES QUINT (1880), VILLE D'ORAN (1880), MOISE (1880), VILLE DE MADRID (1880), VILLE DE BONE (1880), VILLE DE BARCELONE (1880), ABD EL KADER (1880), ISAAC PEREIRE (1880), KLEBER (1880), VILLE DE ROME (1881), VILLE DE NAPLES (1882). Brought into service in July 1880. In 1892, receives triple expansion engines and new boilers. In 1904, receives new boilers again. On January 1, 1913, a water leak causes the shipwreck of the ship off Bône.
