History
Ordered under the name of L'ALGERIE (?), launched under the name of LA GASCOGNE. Third of a series of four steamers all brought into service in 1886. Sisterships : LA CHAMPAGNE, LA BOURGOGNE and LA BRETAGNE. Brought into service in September 1886 on the line Le Havre-New York. In 1894, she is equipped with new boilers and a quadruple expansion machine. Her funnels are raised. Two masts are removed. At the end of 1912, is transferred to Compagnie Sud Atlantique recently created. Serves South America departure from Bordeaux. In August 1914, is transformed into auxiliary cruiser. In 1915, accomplishes three voyages to New York on behalf of Compagnie Générale Transatlantique then is used, again under the flag of Compagnie Sud Atlantique, like stationary ship in Salonique. Laid up in Bordeaux in November 1918, in bad condition. Demolished in Genoa in 1919.
