Compagnie Générale Transatlantique, 1919 - 1929
History
Sisterships: LA PEROUSE, CGAM (1916). Brought into service in 1918. Used on the lines of the North Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico. From 1920, is used as training ship for the officers of the company. In 1929, is renamed WINNIPEG and placed on the lines of the North Pacific. In 1938, is transferred to Compagnie France Navigation. Takes the name of PAIMPOL for the duration of a voyage to South America. In 1939, is entrusted with management to Transat. Immobilized in New-Orleans in 1940, she takes refuge in Marseille in November. May 26, 1941, is captured by Dutch sloop VAN KINSBERGEN off Martinique, whereas she sailed from Marseille to the West Indies via Casablanca. Is managed by Ministry of War Transport. In 1942, is renamed WINNIPEG II. On October 22, 1942, is torpedoed in the North Atlantic, whereas she sailed in convoy, by the German submarine U443. They were no victims.
