History
Ninth of a series of 12 ships. Sisterships : CHARLES QUINT (1880), VILLE D'ORAN (1880), SAINT AUGUSTIN (1880), MOISE (1880), VILLE DE MADRID (1880), VILLE DE BONE (1880), VILLE DE BARCELONE (1880), ABD EL KADER (1880), KLEBER (1880), VILLE DE ROME (1881), VILLE DE NAPLES (1882). Brought into service in July 1880 on the lines of North Africa, at the departure of Marseille. August 8, 1881, takes fire in the harbor of Tunis and is deliberately scuttled. Put into service after repairs in January 1882. In 1891, undergoes a complete reconditioning. In 1903, receives new boilers. On October 26, 1906, is lost by stranding off Port-Mahon (Balearic Islands).
