History
Second of a series of four steamers ordered by the French government and entrusted with management to Transat. Sistership: GOUVERNEUR GENERAL CHANZY (1922), GOUVERNEUR GENERAL DE GUEYDON (1922) and GOUVERNEUR GENERAL JONNART (1923). Brought into service on the lines of North Africa, at the departure of Marseilles, in October 1922. Seized by the Germans December 1942 and used like floating hotel. Transferred in January 1943 to the Italian forces. Renamed AVEZZANO. Seized again by the Germans September 1943 and granted to France. In May 1944, is taken again by the Germans, transformed into ship-hospital and renamed GÖTTINGEN. Scuttled by the German troops in retirement in Marseilles, August 21, 1944. Refloated in April 1946. Considered to be unrecoverable and demolished in Toulon in 1946.
