First of a series of four steamers ordered by the French government and entrusted with management to Transat. Among these four, she will know the longest career, 42 years on the whole. Sisterships: GOUVERNEUR GENERAL GREVY (1922), GOUVERNEUR GENERAL DE GUEYDON (1922) and GOUVERNEUR GENERAL JONNART (1923). Brought into service on the lines of North Africa, at the departure of Marseille, in October 1922. In 1940, is transformed into coal heating. On January 9, 1941, rescues 24 survivors of the steamer LAMORICIERE. In January 1943, is given to the Germans then given to the Italians who rename her NICOSTRA (or NICASTRO?). In June 1943, is taken again by the Germans, transformed into ship-hospital and renamed GIESSEN. Returned to France in March 1944 and laid up. Scuttled in the drydock by the German troops in retirement in La Ciotat, on August 30, 1944. Reconditioned. Her service in October 1945 begins again. According to the needs, carries out also connections with Corsica. In 1956-57, is briefly used on the Bordeaux-Casablanca line, while waiting for the delivery of the VILLE DE BORDEAUX. Carries out her last crossing at the departure of Algiers in September 1962. Returned to the State in January 1963. Demolished in La Spezia in Italy in 1963, after a career of more than 40 years.
