History
The last of a series of 5 ships, ordered under the name of BIARRITZ. Sistership: EUGENE PEREIRE (1888), DUC DE BRAGANCE (1889), MARECHAL BUGEAUD (1890), VILLE D' ALGER (1890). Brought into service in May 1892 on the lines of North Africa, at the departure of Marseille. In 1895-96, is chartered on several occasions to carry out cruisings. In August 1896, takes on board Président Félix Faure from Le Havre to Brest. In 1902-03, undergoes a complete reconditioning and receives new boilers. In 1907, is transformed by the construction of a roof on the back, the addition of a new bridge and the jutting out of the navigation bridge. On February 9, 1910, by bad weather, leaves Marseille for Algiers with 155 passengers and members of crew on his board. The 10, in full storm, runs up against rocks at the North-East of the Island of Minorque. Under the attack of the waves, the boilers explode and the ship sinks. Only one survivor succeeds in reaching the shore.
