Compagnie Générale Transatlantique, 1966 - 1969

liner Fred-Scamaroni
History
In the night from the 26 to 27 June 1965, practically completed, the ship is devastated by a fire. Her putting into service, which was contemplated in July 1965, is delayed by 10 months. Brought into service in May 1966 on the lines of Corsica. Transferred in 1969 to the CGTM which joins together the Mediterranean services of Transat and Compagnie de Navigation Mixte. Same service. April 22, 1970, an important fire breaks out on board. It is restricted by the crew. The ship is then immobilized during two weeks. In 1976, the CGTM becomes the SNCM. Sold in January 1980 to the Danish shipping company Lauritzen. Renamed NUITS SAINT GEORGES, inaugurates in May a new service connecting Dunkerque to Ramsgate. Laid up in October 1980. Sold in November to an Egyptian shipping company. Renamed LORD SINAI then Al TABRA in 1984 and SALEM EXPRESS in 1990. On December 14, 1991, during a travel between Jeddah and Suez, runs up against coral reefs off Safaga and sinks. There will be only 180 survivors, on a total of 644 (654?) people on board.
