Iron steamer with paddle wheels, FRANCE, first of the name and second of the first series of five steamers built in new workshop and shipyards of Saint Nazaire (Penhoët) created by Compagnie Générale Transatlantique (IMPERATRICE EUGENIE, FRANCE, NOUVEAU MONDE, PANAMA, SAINT LAURENT, this last with propeller); Launched the 1st October 1864 and brought into service in June 1865 on the line Saint Nazaire - Vera Cruz. Transferred in August 1872 on the line Le Havre - New York. On September 30, 1872 her engine fails off Cherbourg and returns under sail to Le Havre. Transformed with AMÉRIQUE and EUROPE in 1873/1874 by A. Leslie & Co. in Hebburn (Newcastle) : lengthened of 12m. in the middle, 5m. to the stern, replacement of the boilers and propulsion by propeller ; length 123m, width 13,3m, depth 11,60m, gross tonnage 4.200 tx, displacement 7.700 T, power 3.300 cv. Put into service on November 7, 1874 on the line of New York. In November 1875 the call in Brest is replaced by Plymouth. April 6, 1876 saves the crew of the ROLAND in perdition on the banks of Terre Neuve. From April at July 1884 is chartered to transport the troops of the task force of Tonkin. At the end of 1884, new reconditioning and replacement of boilers before being assigned to the line of the West Indies. In 20 December 1886 seriously damaged by a fire on her way to Fort de France, returns with freight and is repaired in shipyards of Penhoët. From July 1895 to February 1896 third reconditioning in Saint Nazaire: new boilers and triple expansion engines . Put into service on the line Saint Nazaire - Colon, then in 1906 on Le Havre - Bordeaux - Colon and in 1908 on Saint Nazaire - Vera Cruz, often as a pure cargo liner. Sold for the demolition on July 29, 1910 in Cherbourg.
