History
From 1950 to 1954 the Compagnie des Chargeurs Réunis makes build 8 mixed steamers of type "scientists" including 6 under flag of Chargeurs Réunis (CLAUDE BERNARD, LAVOISIER, LOUIS LUMIERE, EDOUARD BRANLY, HENRI POINCARE, CLEMENT ADER) and 2 under flag of subsidiary company Compagnie de Navigation Sud-Atlantique (LAENNEC, CHARLES TELLIER). Brought into service at Le Havre on August 2, 1952 on the line Bordeaux-Buenos Aires, then Hamburg-Le Havre-Bordeaux-South America. In the night from 19 to February 20, 1958 collides in the Scheld with the Turkish cargo liner AYDIN who sinks, CHARLES TELLIER returning to Antwerp for repairs for one month. In 1962, Chargeurs Réunis in front of the deterioration of the economical situation of the line decide to withdraw from. The government incites the Messageries Maritimes to take again the operation of the line in order not to lay up the three steamers. The ships are transferred as well as the rights of goods traffic, to the S.E.A.S. (Service Europe South Atlantic) and the Compagnie de Navigation d'Orbigny. Dealt with on January 2, 1962. Sold the 1st January 1967 to the Cia. de Navegacion Abeto SA of Hong Kong, purchaser of her two twins and renamed LE HAVRE ABETO under Panamanian flag. Assigned to the transport of pilgrims from Indonesia to Djeddah. In 1976 the three ships are transferred to P.T. PERUSAHAAN PALAYAN ARAFAT, the official Indonesian agency managing the ships accomplishing the transport of pilgrims. Laid up on March 28, 1978 in Tandjong Priok. Broken up in June 1984 in Bangladesh.
