Composition of the Executive Committee :
The Association was created in 1930 and groups together around 3500 paid up members.
Since 1946, the Association publishes NEPTUNIA, a magazine concerning maritime history, naval archaeology and scale models. The complete collection of these magazines constitutes an encyclopaedia, widely read throughout the world as much by university researchers as by those with a passion for anything to do with the sea.
The Association runs bookstores in the different port establishments dependant on the Marine Museum. These bookstores offer maritime works, objects and souvenirs relating to the museum. Discussions are underway in order to make French Lines by-products, manufactured under license, available for sale in the different museum boutiques.
The Association edits catalogues of the major exhibitions organised by the museum as well as monographs destined for scale modellers, including the history of the vessel to be built, its plans and photographs with details to include to obtain a lifelike model.
Each year, the association organises a study trip abroad (Turkey in 1997, Portugal in 1998 and the East coast of the USA in 1999) as well as trips in France to maritime sites which are not easily accessible to the general public.
Finally, the Association runs groups for scale modellers in Paris and province, in particularly in Brest. These groups regularly meet up at conferences and exhibitions.

From 1979, several people from Le Havre, who deeply regretted that Le Havre had no museum specially dedicated to the maritime and port heritage, decided, on the initiative of Mr Jean Guestre to create an Association For the museum of maritime and land transports. In 1981, the Association managed to obtain the permission from the Port Autonome of Le Havre to use warehouse 22, situated on the edge of the basin of the Citadelle. Various elements from the heritage, deposits, donations or loans, including four floating vessels permitted over a period of time, the constitution of invaluable collections many of which are unique in France. A workshop for restoration and creation of scale models was created and is nationally recognised today.
At the same time in 1984, at the initiative of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Le Havre another Association was formed known as the Centre Culturel Maritime du Havre for the creation of a Centre de culture scientifique et technique, consecrated to maritime and port activities in Le Havre and supported by institutions, territorial authorities and the state.
In 1991, to unite their efforts, these two Associations merged and became the Association Musée Maritime et Portuaire du Havre.
From 1989, warehouse 22 which was regularly opened to the public and presented a permanent exhibition La mer au hangar 22, retracing the history of maritime and port activities in Le Havre from the 19th century to the present day, which enjoyed a great success with the public.
The demolition of warehouse 22, in order to build a new terminal for cross channel traffic, led to the transfer of the museum into part of the former Customs warehouses, the first dock buildings erected in France, better known as docks Vauban. The scale of the work, in particular the renovation and the compliance with safety standards of a place disused for more than 10 years, meant that the museum could not be reopened as rapidly as hoped despite all the support given.
The links formed with the French Lines Association and Le Havre, the support of institutions, local authorities and the State, the actions of numerous volunteers and sponsors, today allows for the presentation of some of the most remarkable pieces from the collections of the Association Musée Maritime et Portuaire du Havre in the Espace maritime et portuaire des docks Vauban, and also serves to make visitors aware of the importance of this large Normandy port.
