When the
Association was created in September 1995, on the initiative of Eric GIUILY,
who at that time was President of the
CGM and the
SNCM, its mission was, in agreement
with the State, to guarantee the continuity of the historic heritage of these
companies and to associate other private or public partners in the conservation
and development of this heritage.
French Lines main objective
is to present the collections to the general public in exhibition centres and
to make the archives, photographs and historical films available in maritime and
port multi-media libraries in the main French ports where the history of these
companies took place. The Association also develops a communications network
with the different organisations which possess archives and collections
relevant to the French shipping lines in order to make them easily accessible
to researchers and others who in France or abroad show an interest in this
history.
The Association headquarters
are implanted in Le Havre. The Association initiatives stretch as far as Paris,
Dunkerque and Marseille, thanks to an ever increasing number of volunteers and
the support of the CMA CGM and the SNCM, in Paris, Dunkerque, Bordeaux and Marseille.
